ORC International World Championship - Offshore Race


The offshore race of the ORCi Championship started on schedule on June 24th, under a meltemi, the northerly wind that usually blows in July and August, that pushed the fleet around a course back and forth in the Saronic Gulf of Athens. The first around the course was the Farr 52 "Superfast", who managed to maintain an average speed in excess of 10 knots, while the X-332 "Virus", the smallest of the fleet reached a remarkable average of 7 knots. Superfast was able to save their time and lead in corrected time, and stretched their lead in the second part of the race, winning in corrected time also the complete race so getting in the lead in the overall standings.

With an 8th and a 6th place in corrected time George Andreadis Meliti managed to climb in the second place overall, securing a strong Greek lead. The first Italian is in third place, Comet 45 "Libertine", with Francesco De Angelis calling tactics and Lorenzo Bodini at the helm, ahead of another Greek, the other Farr 52 "Brave".

Pierobon's Grand Soleil 37 "Sagola" slipped from first to 6th, but still maintains the leadership in the small boats division, ahead of the other strong Italian contingent of small boats, the M37 "Escandalo" and the X-37 "Squalo Bianco".



The social program saw a big barbecue on the dock for all participants, and the series are half way through, with 5 more races to go to complete the program.
