Slovenian ORC National Championship

23 May 2017

Eleven boats from five countries participated in the open Slovenian ORC National Championship in Izola on May 20th and 21st under the organization of JK Skipper Maribor.

The event started with 15 NM long coastal race and one technical (windward/leeward) race on Saturday. Light rain with 10 knots of wind dominated the day. The fleet started with a coastal race with the south east wind, which shifted to NW and stayed stable until the end of the day.

On Sunday sailors waited for more than two hours for suitable wind conditions, but the wait was worth it as later the conditions improved to yield two windward/leeward races finished in perfect sunny weather with wind average just below ten knots. Another race got started but had to be abandoned due to lack of wind.

The top Slovenian match race skipper Dejan Presen (currently ranked 18th in the world) led the crew on the old fashioned Elan Express named Palada to win the open championship, with the team awarded the title of Slovenian ORC National Champions.

Second place was own by Ukrainian silver Olympic medallist Rodion Luka with the boat Vera Natura (an L30 One Design) and third place was taken by the Croatian boat Orca led by skipper Davor Zanini.

In fourth place was the second Slovenian boat Shark (Sun Fast 3200) with Janez Gorec at the helm and just half point behind was the third Slovenian entry Taia 2 & White Goose (Arya 415) with Goran Djordjevic at the helm.
