Destriero takes early lead at ORC Sportboat Europeans

31 May 2018

Davide Rapotez’s Melges 24 Destriero has won the opening race of the ORC Sportboat European Championship 2018, hosted by YC Porto Piccolo, on a coastal course set off of Trieste, Italy. The all-Corinthian team won this race by 3 min 01 sec in corrected time over another Italian entry in second place – Ugo Guarnieri’s Delta 84 Chardonnay – after just over 3 hours of racing. Third place was taken by another Corinthian entry, Agnes Watger’s Esse 850 Khulula from Germany, just 40 sec behind in corrected time.

After some waiting on the water for wind, the race finally started at 13:26 CET with some breeze filling in from the southwest. The course was set as a 12.4-mile triangle with two long legs, the first leg upwind followed by a 4.6-mile downwind leg.

"We decided to make the start once the sea breeze was finally filling in and we believe it was a good choice,” said RC Chairman David Bartol. “After a General Recall, we hoisted the Uniform Flag to control the start and get the fleet on the course. The wind stayed quite stable for the duration of the first round when, due to a very light wind prediction, we decided to shorten the course as the risk of the wind dying was really high.

“Tomorrow the intention is to stick to the plan to have the start at Noon with the first Windward/Leeward race and the hope is that there will be enough wind to bring home at least two races.” There are 27 teams competing at this event from 6 nations, with racing held through Sunday.
