John Roome passes, ORC Chairman 1978 - 88

14 June 2018

It is with great sadness and regret that ORC announces the passing of ORC past Chairman John Roome, who died peacefully at home on Friday 8th June, at the age of 90. John was a distinguished solicitor and recognized figure in the UK offshore yacht racing scene.

He also greatly enjoyed cruising on Flycatcher and later in a Bowman 40 venturing to the Baltic and the Mediterranean.
John was RORC Commodore from 1976 -1978, and thereafter elected ORC Chairman, when David Edwards gave him the helm of our organization after its first decade. He remained in the ORC chairman’s position until 1988, when he passed the helm to another – future - RORC Commodore, John Bourke.

During his term John shepherded the ORC through the transition from the International Offshore Rule (IOR) to the new International Measurement System (IMS), a VPP system that originated in the USA and forms the basis of the current ORC rules.

After his term in the ORC chair John was elected Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron, proud to be the first “mister” in that position.

John will be remembered for his unflappable, even-handed patience in conducting productive meetings of nationals from around the world, and for his pleasant good humour in the lounge after meetings, especially among RSDS members.
