Giulietta II and Project O3 win ORC Portuguese Nationals

5 July 2018

Alexandre and Julieta Kosssack’s J/V56 Giulietta 2, skippered by four-time 470 Olympic sailor Miguel Nunes, and Frederico Rodrigues’s Vrolijk 37 Project O3 have won the Portuguese ORC Championship in Classes A and B, respectively.

Organized by Associao Naval De Lisboa (ANL) under sanction of the Portuguese Sailing Federation, the event was held near Lisbon in the Costa da Caparica area, known for its excellent sandy beaches, from 29 June to 1 July. The regatta attracted some of the country’s top 11 racing boats and crews. The Championship format was composed of 1 offshore and 5 inshore races.

On Day One under heavy rain all day the offshore race started in Lisbon, rounding at the harbor entrance buoy with the finish line at the mouth of the Tagus River. The wind this day was a southerly that was inconsistently between 5 and 14 knots. This unusual direction for this area provided excellent, competitive and unpredictable racing all day long.

The remaining two days featured fierce competition in inshore racing, and the final results were not known until the end of the very last day, with any boat in both classes in contention to win the cup. Winds were W/SW at 6 to to 10 knots on Day Two and 7 to 15 knots on the final day.

On the third and final day, the odds were switched, and after having won all 3 races on this last day Giulietta 2 took the title in ORC Class A, ahead of the IMX 45 Xekmatt and the Comet 41 Emotion.

As for ORC Class B, Frederico Rodrigues’s Project O3 scores of 3-2-1 in the last three races guaranteed them the title against the First 34.7 Atchim and the Dufour 40 Performance Super Acor.
