Selection of 2018 ORC Champions on Lake Constance

11 October 2018

The Final Race organized by the Regatta Union Lake Constance (RVB) took place in Ueberlingen and marks the conclusion of the International ORC Lake Constance Championships for this windward-leeward and long- distance race series. The overall winner in all ORC classes in the windward-leeward series and winner of the 2018 ORC Champions Cup is the J/V 37 “Shooting Star” helmed by Dr. Dieter Kurz, which secured the win with a 3rd place in the Final Race, by a tiny margin ahead of the Dehler 33 “Boreas” helmed by Dietmar Lenz.

The overall winner in all ORC classes in the long-distance series and Long Distance ORC Champion is the Melges 24 “Bloodhound” helmed by Jo Schwarz. He and his team won the championship solidly with only first places. After a nerve-wracking delay caused by a lack of wind and just before the daily time limit, a northerly breeze set in which allowed a fair start in good conditions. The Final Race was held in cooperation with the Sailing and Motorboat Club Ueberlingen (SMCÜ) with 30 participating boats and with almost 200 active sailors. This year’s participation was good despite the very low water levels on Lake Constance, which hindered some ORC boats to take part.

In the broad view, organizers report a positive trend in ORC racing on Lake Constance with overall 169 participants in the windward-leeward series and 224 participants in the long-distance series.  There was healthy competition in all 4 ORC classes (ORC 1, ORC 2, ORC 3, ORC sport boats) where teams fought for a better place in their class as well as for the overall win. Racing results after corrected time have been tight which has kept everybody motivated to keep going for the whole season.

For this year, we introduced a modified High-Point-Ranking System which found high acceptance among the participants. We made it more fair for all boats to have a chance of winning the championship regardless of the size of their class. As a result of a steady class stewardship and thoughtful adaptations, we have counted 85 Swiss, German and Austrian boats in both championships on Lake Constance. For 2019 we plan to introduce the ORC Class 4 as we received requests from owners to broaden the championship.

We would like to thank again the SMCÜ for hosting the Final Race and Marc Morath for the professional handling of the regatta.

The award ceremony took place at a gala dinner and live music in the newly designed Comturey restaurant on the isle of Mainau. 187 sailors celebrated a very festive end to the season and are looking forward to the next sailing season.
