New ORC South Africa fleet is thriving

14 April 2018

As we fast approach the 150 certificate mark in South Africa, the formalities of South African Sailing - our world sailing Member National Authority - proposing that ORC South Africa becomes a member of the Offshore Racing Congress has been confirmed, and South Africa will be presented to become a full member of the congress at the ORC AGM later this year. Also on the radar is the establishment of an independent South African rating office.

Keelboat sailing in the KZN region is embracing ORC and both PYC and RNYC are measuring up and submitting applications for ratings. There are a number of people asssiting with this, including Ron Pet, Rob and Sandy Samways, Craig Millar and Hemraj Gokal.

The Eastern Cape is also embracing the system with John Tudehope and Tony Bailes taking the lead, and a number of yachts at ABYC are already rated. In the Northern Region, Deon Viljoen is mobilising a club-by-club approach to introduce the system for the boats on the Vaal. There are also ORC rated boats on the Gariep in the Freestate.

In the Western Cape, SBYC (Glenn Drewry), RCYC (JC Knobel, Ian Watkins), HBYC, FBYC (Andrew McKenzie and Paul van Tellingen) and GBYC all have yachts being rated under ORC, and RCYC have a full season of sailing exclusively under this rating behind them. All premier regional regattas and offshore distance races in the Western Cape are sailed under ORC Club. There are a number of people involved in measurement in the region, and the intention is to train Academy students to understand measurement and ratings.

Both North and Ullman sail lofts have certified sail measurers for ORC. Togther, the drive towards a single credible national measurement-based keelboat rating system is taking good shape!
