4 October 2019

The Turkish National Championship of the Turkish Sailing Federation Sportboat Class was held in İstanbul and hosted by the Kalamıº Sailing Club between 27-29 September 2019. Twenty-seven teams entered with large varied of designs that included Donovan GP26’s, Farr 25’s, Melges 24’s, Delphia 24’s, J70’s , J80’s, SB20’s, Cheese 6.5’s, First Class 7.5’s, Archambault 25’s and Platu 25’s.

This year the championship also hosted noted pro sailor and boatbuilder Mike Beasley who relocated to the US from New Zealand and as the skipper and helmsman of the Donovan GP 26 Rattle ’n Rum has won the famous Charleston Race Week in the ORC Sportboat Class several times.

The ORC's Performance Curve Scoring and Coastal Time on Time calculation methods were used in the championship which was composed of five windward-leaward races and one coastal race.

The championship turned out to be a highly competitive regatta especially among the three Farr 25s, three J70s and one GP26, with close upwind and downwind legs and tight mark roundings in winds between 5 to 14 knots and a beautiful view of Istanbul from Kalamıº Bay and between the Princess Islands.

At the end of three days of racing the Farr 25 and J70 class boats were in the top ranks, with racing so close that a victory was shared to the second in corrected time in last Coastal race.

This event served as a prelude to next year’s planned 2020 ORC Sportboat European Championship, with details on this event to be announced soon. Top five overall winners were:

1) Nimbus – J70 1-2-1-3-(4)-3: 10 points
