Vikira wins third consecutive Admiral Yisunsin Regatta

15 November 2019

The Ker 40 VIKIRA from South Korea has won their third straight championship title in the 13th Admiral Yisunsin Race 2019 held at TongYeong City, KyungNam Province, Korea. Thirty-six entries from Russia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, US and Korea sailed two coastal and two inshore races in three consecutive days.

The first day in a five-hour coastal race was a competition for the afterguards of each team, squeezing maximum benefit from local valley winds on the course. VIKIRA led the fleet followed by M1 (KOR Ross 45) and GASTION (RUS806, First 40.7) in Class 1. In Class 2, FIRST (RUS55000, First 40.7) kept the leading position throughout the race.

The fair winds of 8 to 10 knots came backed again in the second days inshore races. In Class 1, besides the VIKIRA, two First 40.7s - TEAM ARAMARINA (KOR3313) and GASTION (RUS806) - were in a head to head match race throughout the races.
On the final Day 3, the other 4 hour coastal race was a battle of sophisticated boat handling under very light wind conditions. Only VIKIRA and FIRST found their lane of wind and left the fleet far beyond them. But the wind direction changed and brought the fleet up from behind, taking away the initial advantages held by VIKIRA and FIRST.

However, in the end the winners in each class in corrected time were VIKIRA in Class 1, FIRST in Class 2 and a local boat AMIGO (KOR5597, Yamaha 30R) in Class 3. The three Champions in each class showed strong competitiveness in the very fickle winds of TongYeong, and for their consistent performance in all races, the overall winner was declared to be VIKIRA again this year.

In this 13th edition of the Yisunsin race, colorful events were also held, including a rock music festival, a radio sailing race, and races in the Optimist, 2.4mR, J/24 and other classes. See you again in the next 14th edition.
