In
its first night at sea, the fleet of 88 starters to this year’s
Sydney Hobart Race has been reduced to 70 by strong southerly winds
of up to 30 knots along with high seas. Rigging and sail failures
have been the major problems, and so far no injuries are reported.
This classic 628-mile race got off to an enthusiastic start after a
one year pandemic hiatus, with the harbor full of boats, media and
spectators. Out of several scoring divisions, there are 49 entries
racing full-crewed ORCi and 14 entries racing ORC 2-Handed.
Currently Simon Kurts’s classic S&S 47 Love & War is leading the
ORCi full-crewed division, while Peter Franki’s Sydney 36 Salt
Shaker is leading the 2-Handed ORCi division.
