Racing tightens at the ORC World Championship

October 3, 2024 - Newport, Rhode Island, USA - A delayed start to wait for wind today still yielded two more windward-leeward inshore races at the 2024 ORC World Championship held at New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. With five inshore races completed, the scorelines now have one discard applied, resulting in even closer points margins on the leaderboard in some classes.

Today the weather was the star in Day Three of the 2024 ORC World Championship held at New York Yacht Club at Harbour Court. A rather gloomy forecast of a 6- to 8-knot easterly blossomed into 10 to 12 knots and what many locals called some of the best conditions of the season.

After 24 to 30 hours of racing and sailing courses varying in length from 157 to 203 miles the fleet has now finished and the results in for the first race of the 2024 ORC World Championship held at New York Yacht Club at Harbour Court. These results are significant for all of the 43 teams competing because they are not discardable in the final score tallies.

After three days of inspections, the first race of the 2024 ORC World Championship organised by the New York Yacht Club in cooperation with the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC) will start on Monday with a long race designed to test the offshore skills of the 43 teams entered the week-long event.

The final day of the 22nd Rolex Swan Cup treated the fleet of competitors to a beautiful day at sea, the best possible invitation to return for the next edition in 2026. The light easterly wind, which increased from 8 to 12 knots, allowed a coastal race to be held for the classes competing in compensated time, and two windward-leeward races for the Swan One Design classes.

No less than 101 boats from the Finnish shipyard have enrolled in this 22nd edition, as always organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of Rolex and in collaboration with Nautor Swan. This year marks 40 years of partnership, dating back to 1984 when the third edition of the Swan Cup adopted its current name.

Three ORC West Coast Champions crowned

Three new ORC West Coast Champions were crowned in the 60th edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series: Dave MacEwan’s Rogers 46 LUCKY DUCK in Class A, Drew Freides’s Cape 31 PACIFIC YANKEE in Class B and Zach Berkowitz’s J/100 FEATHER in Class C. For winning Class B, Freides also won a Rolex timepiece for his team’s victory in the 7-race series.
