2018 US ORC Regional Championships

12 February 2018

There are two new ORC regional championship events being planned for the 2018 racing season, with some taking entries now. The first is the East Coast ORC Championship at Sperry Charleston Race Week being held over April 12-15. Two offshore and two inshore course areas are planned, along with a Pursuit class for boats interested in a one-per-day distance race format. The addition of a coastal race to the offshore course race formats is another innovation anticipated at this year’s event, thereby qualifying it as an ORC regional championship.

Another regional event is the 2018 ORC Chesapeake Championship. This will consist of course racing and distance racing around the mid-Chesapeake in classic Fall conditions. Winners in each class will be determined from combined scoring from the Annapolis YC Fall Series held over October 13-14 and the Storm Trysail Club Chesapeake Station’s annual Annapolis Fall Regatta held over October 19-21.

ORC’s science-based VPP enables multiple scoring options depending on wind speed and course type, so the racing promises to be close and fair even with a diverse range of boats types in each class and in what’s likely to be varied wind conditions in each of these series.

ORC also wants to thank US Sailing for the opportunity to be a Bronze Level supporter of their Leadership Forum event held in St Petersburg Beach over February 1-3 - visit sailingleadership.org for a copy of “Demystifying the Rating Rules.”
