Rambler 88 first to finish Palermo - Monte Carlo Race

27 August 2018

After 437 miles of sailing, George David’s Rambler 88 from the USA was the first yacht to cross the finish line of the XIV edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo Race, organized by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia in collaboration with the Yacht Club de Monaco and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the support from the Municipality of Palermo, the Regional Council of Tourism, Sports and Entertainment, and Fondazione Sicilia, and the sponsors Banca Mediolanum, Tasca d'Almerita, Condorelli, Riolocar and Gesap. Their finish time of 55H 34M 34S was well short of the record time of 47H 46M 48S set in 2015 by Igor Simcic's Maxi Esimit Europa 2.

This year’s race had a record turnout of 54 yachts from nine nations. Rambler was also first through the gate at Porto Cervo, followed by the Maxi 72 Lucky owned by Bryon Ehrhart, the multihull Ad Maiora owned by Bruno Cardile, the Farr 70 Atalanta II owned by Carlo Puri Negri and the Cookson 50 Endless Game owned by Pietro Moschini. In IRC scoring Atalanta II led the pack in corrected time at the gate, while Lucky was winning at this stage in ORC scoring.

For the second time, Rambler 88’s line honors performance awards them the Giuseppe Tasca d'Almerita Trophy, awarded to the first in fleet to cross the finish line in real time.

Overall winners in corrected time were Endless Game, followed by Jakoubek Zdenek’s M37 Hebe V in ORC scoring, and Domonique Tian’s Ker 46 Tonnere de Glen followed by Paolo Sanguettola’s GS34 Aigylion X2 in IRC scoring.
