ORC DH Worlds 2024 - Meet the Team - Hasan Ciplak and Ozsoy Seref

5 June 2024 - Norway, Oslo - As the 2024 ORC DH World Championship in Norway approaches, we are happy to introduce some participating teams. Please meet Hasan Ciplak and Ozsoy Seref from Turkey, sailing on the chartered X-95. Their journey to the championship is a tale of unexpected connections and shared passion for the sea.

ORC: Why did you decide to come to Norway?
Hasan Ciplak: To be here is a result of several coincidences. In my hometown, Datca, in the south of Turkey, I am the chief of the Yacht Club. Last year we arranged a Cup to pay homage to ancient sailors dating back to 1100 BC in Knidos. We invited 20 master sailors from around the world. Via UK Sails in Turkey, we happened to get in contact with UK Sails Norway and Team Rebella from KNS.
We had such a great time together, and Team Rebella encouraged us to come and sail in Norway - And, here we are!
We hope this will be the beginning of a closer relationship between our countries and that we can continue the historical tradition of our fathers/ancestors from the antique period, and later exchange culture and develop a common understanding through it.

ORC: What motivates you in double-handed sailing?
Hasan Ciplak: Sailing has seen a significant surge in popularity in Turkey over recent years, driven in part by our rich shorthand tradition and the annual Trialcup held during the winter season. My team, M2, proudly emerged victorious in our class, finding immense satisfaction and motivation in the challenges of shorthand sailing. When news of the Double-Handed Worlds in Norway reached our ears, our response was immediate: "Why not? Let's go!"
The prospect of navigating the seas with only two crew members for three consecutive days presents us with a monumental sporting challenge. Accustomed to our relatively small yet demanding vessel, we eagerly anticipate testing our skills in the chilly Norwegian conditions, despite our lack of experience in such climates.
Our excitement mounts as we prepare to compete against shorthand crews from nine other countries, viewing this as an opportunity to showcase our prowess on the international stage.
