Perfect conditions on Day 4 at the 2023 ORC World Championship

Sunny skies and 12-18 knots of wind were a welcome respite for the 111 teams competing here in Kiel on Day 4 of the 2023 ORC World Championship after three consecutive days of blustery west winds. Two windward-leeward races were conducted for each of the three classes competing on their own course areas, with the challenge not being the wind speed but the wind shifts that kept race managers from Kieler-Yacht Club busy with their course management.

Yet another day of brisk westerly winds in the Kieler Bucht prompted race managers from Kieler Yacht-Club to hold another morning Coastal Race on Day Three of the 2023 ORC World Championship. This was the second Coastal race for Class A and the third for Classes B and C.

In this second day of racing at the 2023 ORC World Championship, the persistent low-pressure center in southern Scandinavia continued to drive strong westerly winds in the Kieler Bucht. Accordingly, race managers from Kieler Yacht-Club set a coastal course for Classes B and C with early leaders emerging in these classes after two races.

The weather today in the Kiel Bucht region was exactly as forecasted, with strong westerly winds of 20-35 knots on the first Coastal Race of the 2023 ORC World Championship, producing a wild but fast and fun experience for the 113 boats competing in the event.

Based on a forecast of west-northwest gale-force winds of 25 to over 40 knots in the Kiel Bucht region tomorrow, race managers from Kiel Yacht Club have amended the format of the 2023 ORC World Championship to start with a shorter Coastal Race rather than the Offshore long-distance race.

The 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE finished yesterday with two exciting final races in moderate westerly breezes and sunshine. Two boats completed the Finals series with perfect scores Javier Banderas’ TEATRO DEL SOHO CAXIABANK actually won all 11 of their races in Majorica ORC 2 over the six days of racing whilst the Italian crew on Enzo de Blazio’s CA’N EDUARDO SCUGNIZZA were unbeaten during their finals series.

With racing at the 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE due to start Monday on the Bay of Palma, the weekend has seen final tuning and preparations being completed, as nearly 100 teams, representing 16 different nations, are set to line up in eight different classes at the Mediterranean’s summer showcase regatta over the coming week.

On Friday July 28th, the Real Club Náutico de Palma hosted its traditional opening ceremony for the premier event of the season, which officially kicks off on Saturday with the first of two days dedicated to the registration of teams and measurement of the fleet.

Another successful Race to Mackinac is in the books, with today’s award ceremony taking place on the great lawn of Mission Point Resort. The race known as ‘America’s Offshore Challenge,’ delivered in spectacular fashion yet again with its mix of squalls, calms and most of all, new memories for the 240 teams competing.

At 229 monohull entries, the annual 300-mile Race to Mackinac from Chicago is the largest race in the western hemisphere to use the ORC system for rating and scoring. There will be 35 entries starting today in three Cruising ‘sections’ (local term for classes) and the rest of the fleet starting tomorrow in 19 additional sections.

The 2023 ORC East Coast Championship was hosted by the New York Yacht Club in Newport, R.I. which featured a mix of buoy racing and point-to-point races, giving the 20 competitors from 31 to 74 feet in length a hint of what’s to come next fall when the Club hosts the 2024 ORC World Championship.
